MLP | Boston Testifies at State House on Disparities Action Network Panel

June 9, 2009
MLP | Boston reinforced its strong support for the Massachusetts EOHHS Office of Health Equity (OHE) this morning at a hearing of the state legislature’s Joint Committee on Public Health. Executive Director Samantha Morton appeared on a panel organized by the Disparities Action Network and advocated for OHE’s retention in the midst of these difficult economic times.  She cited its critical role in combating health disparities in the Commonwealth.

Samantha Morton further called for any mandate for a renewed Office of Health Equity to include a focus on the social determinants of health; a message drawn from first-hand insight that a variety of social factors (some of which are amenable to resolution via legal interventions) regularly impact the health and well-being of patients.

[Update]: Ultimately, the OHE budget was maintained and its budget language did include recognition of the social factors that impact health disparities. MLP | Boston applauds this decision and is grateful on behalf of all vulnerable patients in the Commonwealth favorably affected.
